SERP Preview Tool

See how your title tag and meta description will look in Google search results before you publish. The tool measures them in pixels, the way Google does, and shows where they will be cut off on desktop and mobile.

Built and maintained by the Kadima team. Updated September 2026.

A

Google trims titles and descriptions by pixel width, not by character count, so these limits are close estimates. Google also rewrites some snippets, so treat this as a guide.

How to use the SERP preview tool

STEP 1

Paste your title

The bar turns orange as you get close to the limit and red once Google is likely to cut it off.

STEP 2

Add your URL and description

The preview updates as you type, including the breadcrumb Google builds from your URL.

STEP 3

Check both views

Switch between desktop and mobile. Mobile cuts descriptions shorter, so put the important words first.

Why pixel width matters more than characters

Google trims titles and descriptions by width on screen, not by character count. A title full of wide letters like W and M gets cut sooner than one full of i and l. As a rule of thumb, keep titles under about 580 pixels, roughly 50 to 60 characters, and descriptions under about 920 pixels on desktop, roughly 150 to 160 characters.

Writing a title that earns the click

Put your main keyword near the start, say clearly what the page gives the reader, and add your brand at the end if there’s room. Every page should have its own title. Titles are also one of the first things AI tools read to work out what a page is about, so clear beats clever.

Writing a meta description

Summarise the page in a sentence or two, answer the searcher's question, and end with a reason to click. Google bolds words that match the search, so use the words people search for. Google rewrites many descriptions, and the closer yours matches the page, the more likely it is to be shown. Need a clean URL to go with it? Try the slug generator.

Questions about titles and meta descriptions

How long should a title tag be?

Aim for about 50 to 60 characters, and keep it under roughly 580 pixels wide. Longer titles aren’t penalised, but Google will cut them off in results.

How long should a meta description be?

Around 150 to 160 characters works on desktop. Mobile shows less, often about 120 characters, so put the most important words at the start.

Why does Google show a different title from mine?

Google rewrites titles it thinks don’t describe the page well. The usual triggers are titles that are too long, stuffed with keywords, or very different from the main heading on the page.

Does the meta description affect rankings?

Not directly. It affects how many people click your result, and a better click-through rate means more traffic from the same ranking.

Why does the preview say my text will be cut off?

The tool measures your text in pixels using the fonts and widths Google uses. Once it passes the limit, Google usually ends the snippet with an ellipsis. The limits are close estimates, as Google adjusts its layout from time to time.
