ChatGPT ads cost what you bid in an auction. There is no fixed price list. OpenAI recommends starting Clicks campaigns at $3 to $5 per click, advertisers report CPMs of roughly $25 to $60, and self-serve accounts have no published minimum spend. What you actually pay depends on your bid, how relevant your ad is to the conversation, and how many other advertisers want the same moments.
Below is how ChatGPT ad pricing works in 2026, what a realistic test budget looks like, and the costs that sit outside the ad platform.
How ChatGPT ads are priced
ChatGPT ads appear below ChatGPT’s answers. Each ad carries your brand name, favicon, a headline, a short description, an image and a link to your landing page. You choose one of three campaign objectives, and the objective decides how you are billed.
| Objective | What you bid | What you are billed for |
|---|---|---|
| Views (reach) | A maximum CPM | Every 1,000 impressions |
| Clicks (traffic) | A maximum CPC | Each valid click |
| Conversions | Optimized toward a conversion event | Still each valid click, not each conversion |
Ads are chosen in a relevance-weighted, second-price auction. In plain terms, the highest bid does not automatically win. OpenAI weighs the conversation, your landing page, your ad text and the context hints you set on the ad group, and a winning ad pays a price set by the runner-up rather than its own full bid. The full billing rules are in OpenAI’s Ads in ChatGPT: The Basics.
Budgets are set per campaign as either a daily or a lifetime amount. Maximize Results bidding needs a daily budget. Daily minimums exist but vary by account currency, and OpenAI’s bidding and budgets documentation does not publish them.
What advertisers are paying in 2026
OpenAI publishes no cross-advertiser benchmarks and guarantees no CPC, CPA or ROAS. The figures below are OpenAI’s own guidance plus what advertisers have reported publicly since self-serve buying opened to US businesses on 5 May 2026.
| Cost metric | Typical range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Starting CPC bid | $3 to $5 | OpenAI recommendation |
| Reported CPC | $3 to $22 | Advertiser reports |
| Reported CPM | $25 to $60, some above $60 | Advertiser reports |
| Early pilot CPM | $60, with a $200,000 minimum | Press reports, March 2026 |
| Self-serve minimum spend | None published | OpenAI |
Two things stand out. First, ChatGPT clicks cost about what Google search clicks cost. A $3 to $5 starting bid is close to the $5.26 average Google search CPC that LocaliQ reported across 16,446 campaigns in 2025. Second, the price range is wide because the inventory is new. Early buyers paid pilot rates with six-figure minimums, and prices have moved a lot since the self-serve Ads Manager opened. We compare the two channels side by side in ChatGPT ads vs Google Ads.
What drives the cost up or down
Five things move your cost per click or per thousand impressions.
- Your bid. Ads Manager shows bid-strength guidance. A bid flagged as weak will still run, but delivery will be limited.
- Relevance. Because the auction is relevance-weighted, a tightly matched ad and landing page can win at a lower price than a generic one.
- Context hints. These tell the system which conversations suit your ad. They are not exact-match keywords, so broad hints buy more volume and vaguer traffic.
- Competition. Categories with high customer value, such as software, finance and legal, attract more bidders per conversation.
- Who sees ads. Ads only show to Free and Go users. Plus, Pro, Business and under-18 accounts see none, which caps the supply of impressions.
How much to budget for a first test
Work back from the number of clicks you need to judge the channel. We aim for at least 300 clicks before reading results, because fewer than that rarely shows a reliable conversion rate.
| Assumed CPC | Clicks | Test budget | Over 4 weeks |
|---|---|---|---|
| $3 | 300 | $900 | About $32 a day |
| $5 | 300 | $1,500 | About $54 a day |
| $8 | 300 | $2,400 | About $86 a day |
Then check the result against what a customer is worth to you. If your landing page converts 4% of clicks, 300 clicks at $5 gives about 12 leads at $125 each. Our free CPA calculator and break-even ROAS calculator do this math for you, so you know your ceiling before you set a bid.
Costs outside the auction
Media is only part of the bill. Plan for these too:
- Tracking setup. Conversion bidding and reporting rely on OpenAI’s pixel or Conversions API. Getting events right usually takes a few hours of developer time.
- Creative. Every ad needs an image asset and copy written for a conversation, not a search results page.
- Landing pages. People arrive mid-question. A page that answers the question they were asking converts far better than your homepage.
- Management. If an agency runs the account, add its fee. Our PPC management starts at $1,450 a month plus a $250 setup fee, with your ad account staying in your name.
How to lower your cost per result
Start with a Clicks campaign at the recommended $3 to $5 bid rather than Views. You only pay when someone visits, and you learn which conversations send buyers.
Write one ad group per intent. A hint set built around “comparing project management software for a small team” will beat one stuffed with ten loosely related themes, because relevance lowers what you pay.
Match the landing page to the conversation. If the hint is about pricing, send people to pricing.
Give the campaign two weeks before you change bids. Spend data can lag 7 to 8 hours, and judging a campaign on day two leads to bad calls.
Use UTM parameters. They persist on ChatGPT ad clicks, so you can compare ChatGPT traffic with Google and Meta in your own analytics instead of trusting one platform’s numbers.
If you would rather have a team run it, our ChatGPT ads agency service sets up tracking, context hints and bids, and reports cost per lead next to your other channels.
FAQ
Is there a minimum budget for ChatGPT ads?
OpenAI publishes no minimum spend for self-serve accounts. Campaign budgets do have a daily minimum that depends on your account currency, and Ads Manager tells you the amount if you go below it.
Do you pay per click or per impression?
Either. Views campaigns bill per 1,000 impressions and Clicks campaigns bill per valid click. Conversion-optimized campaigns also bill per click, not per conversion.
How much should I bid on ChatGPT ads?
OpenAI recommends starting Clicks campaigns at $3 to $5 per click and adjusting from the bid-strength guidance in Ads Manager.
Can advertisers see what people typed into ChatGPT?
No. Ads are matched to conversation context, but prompt content is not shared with advertisers. You see impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC, average CPM and conversions.
Are ChatGPT ads cheaper than Google Ads?
Per click, they land in a similar range. OpenAI’s suggested $3 to $5 starting bid is close to the $5.26 average Google search CPC LocaliQ reported for 2025. Whether ChatGPT is cheaper per customer depends on your conversion rate, which is why a 300-click test is worth running before you scale.
