TikTok Spark Ads: What They Are and How to Run Them

TikTok Spark Ads are paid boosts of real TikTok posts, either from your own account or from a creator who gives you permission. Unlike a standard in-feed ad, a Spark Ad keeps every view, like, comment, share and follow on the original post. People see an ordinary TikTok with your call-to-action added, which is why Spark Ads often earn more engagement and cheaper clicks than ads built from scratch.

This guide covers how Spark Ads work, how to set one up step by step, what they cost and how we decide which posts to spark.

What are TikTok Spark Ads?

TikTok describes Spark Ads as a native ad format that lets you use organic TikTok posts and their features in advertising. You can promote:

  • Posts from your own TikTok account
  • Posts made by other creators, with their authorization

The engagement the ad earns is credited to the original post, so the social proof stays after the campaign ends. If a post gathers 2,000 comments while it is promoted, it keeps them when the budget stops. You can read the official details in TikTok’s Spark Ads FAQ.

Spark Ads vs regular in-feed ads

Spark Ads Regular in-feed ads
Content An existing organic post A video uploaded only as an ad
Who posts it Your account or an authorized creator Your brand identity
Engagement Stays on the original post Stays on the ad only
Caption The post’s own caption, not editable in the ad Written for the ad
Feel Looks like a normal post from that account Looks like an ad from your brand

Spark Ads support most objectives on auction buying, including Reach, Traffic, Video Views, Community interaction, App promotion, Conversions, Lead generation and Sales. On Reach and Frequency buying they support Reach, Traffic and Video Views.

How to create Spark Ads, step by step

Step 1: Get the post authorized

If the post is on a creator’s account, the creator generates a code in the TikTok app:

  1. Open the video.
  2. Tap the three dots.
  3. Tap Ad settings.
  4. Tap Generate to create the post code, then send it to you.

If the post is on your own account and the account is linked to TikTok Ads Manager, you can skip the code.

Step 2: Build the campaign in TikTok Ads Manager

  1. In TikTok Ads Manager, open the Campaign tab and click +Create.
  2. Choose your advertising objective and complete the campaign and ad group settings.
  3. At ad level, go to Ad creatives and click + Add videos or images.
  4. Select the TikTok posts tab. Pick a post from your linked account, or click Add post and paste the creator’s code. You can authorize up to 20 codes at once.
  5. Choose the TikTok account to use as the ad’s identity.
  6. Add your call-to-action, destination URL and tracking, then click Publish all.

Rules and limits to know

  • Finish the caption first. You cannot edit a post’s caption after it is authorized as an ad.
  • Private posts go public. A private video becomes public once it is used in a campaign and stays public while promoted.
  • Video length. Videos up to 10 minutes can be sparked.
  • Account limit. Each Ads Manager account supports up to 10,000 Spark Ads.
  • Deleting posts. A creator has to remove the authorization before deleting a sparked post, and a code can only be deleted once every ad using it is gone.
  • Banned posts. Posts banned on the organic side are rejected in Ads Manager.

What Spark Ads cost

Spark Ads are bought in the same auction as other TikTok ads, under the same minimums: more than $50 a day per campaign and more than $20 a day per ad group. Industry benchmarks for 2026 put Spark Ad CPMs at around $5 to $10, slightly above the $4 to $8 typical of standard in-feed ads, with cost per click often lower because the content earns more engagement.

If you spark a creator’s post, budget for usage rights on top of their posting fee. That usually adds 20% to 30%. We cover budgets, benchmarks and creative costs in detail in how much TikTok ads cost.

Which posts to turn into Spark Ads

Not every post deserves a budget. We look for posts that already prove themselves organically:

  1. A strong hook. Most viewers stay past the first two to three seconds.
  2. Above-average watch time compared with your other posts.
  3. Comments that show intent, such as people asking for the price, the link or where to buy.
  4. A clear tie to the offer. A funny post that has nothing to do with what you sell will collect views, not customers.
  5. Room for a call-to-action. The ad adds a button, so the post should make clicking it feel natural.

Spark Ads best practices

  1. Test 3 to 5 posts per ad group. Let TikTok move budget to the winners rather than betting on one video.
  2. Mix your own posts with creator posts. Creator content often wins on trust, brand posts on clarity.
  3. Agree authorization terms up front. Confirm with creators how long you can run their post and what happens to comments.
  4. Watch the comments. Promoted posts attract many more comments, and replying quickly keeps the social proof positive.
  5. Refresh every few weeks. Swap in new posts as click-through rate falls.
  6. Set up tracking first. The TikTok Pixel or Events API must record leads or sales so the algorithm optimizes toward buyers.

If you would rather hand this over, our TikTok ads agency team finds the posts worth sparking, manages creator authorizations and runs the campaigns as part of our PPC management.

FAQ

What is the difference between Spark Ads and in-feed ads?

Spark Ads promote an existing organic post and keep all engagement on that post. Regular in-feed ads use a video uploaded only as an ad, and their engagement stays with the ad.

Can I use another creator’s video as a Spark Ad?

Yes, with their permission. The creator opens the video, taps the three dots, then Ad settings, and generates a code that you add in TikTok Ads Manager.

Are Spark Ads cheaper than regular TikTok ads?

Often per click, not always per impression. 2026 benchmarks put Spark Ad CPMs at about $5 to $10 against $4 to $8 for in-feed ads, but higher engagement usually brings the cost per click down.

Can I edit the caption of a Spark Ad?

No. The ad uses the post’s own caption and display name, and the caption cannot be changed after the post is authorized, so finalize it before you share the code.
